What is a DID number?

A DID (Direct Inward Dialling) number is a virtual telephone number that routes an inbound call straight to a specific user, team or workflow over the internet - without needing a dedicated physical line for each destination.

Direct Inward Dialling numbers explained
Overview

About what is a did number?

DID stands for Direct Inward Dialling. In the analogue-telephony era, giving every employee a direct number required a physical wire per person into the building. DID technology replaced that with a shared voice channel that carries the dialled digits so the exchange can route the call to the right internal destination.

In the modern VoIP era, a DID is a virtual number. It exists in a carrier's database, and when a caller dials it, the call is routed as IP traffic straight to whatever endpoint (a user, an IVR, an AI receptionist, a hunt group, a workflow) you have configured - anywhere in the world.

That has three practical consequences for a UK business. First, you can give every user a direct number without adding physical lines. Second, you can hold local DDIs in countries where you have no office. Third, you can move or reassign numbers in minutes with no engineer visit.

DIDs are provisioned per country subject to that country's regulator. Some require a local trading address, some require proof of use, some restrict who may hold toll-free ranges. We handle the in-country regulatory checks so your DIDs stay compliant.

For international sales, service and market entry, DIDs are the mechanism that lets you present a local number in every market while keeping one central team. See our coverage explorer for the countries we cover and the features supported in each.
